— meals that fill in a missing energy

In short

The Five Elements are five energies: WoodFireEarthMetalWater. The easiest way to balance them is to find the element you have least of in your Saju and eat foods with that tone.

The Five Elements are five “qualities”

Every one of the Eight Characters in a Saju belongs to one of the five. They're less like substances and closer to qualities of movement.

ElementToneSeason · time of dayIn a person
Wood TreeReaching out · beginningSpring · morningThe drive to plan and get things going
Fire FlameSpreading · revealingSummer · middayThe drive to express and shed light
Earth SoilSupporting · mediatingSeasonal transitionsThe strength to hold steady and embrace
Metal IronHarvesting · tidying upAutumn · eveningThe strength to conclude and to cut ties
Water StreamSeeping · storingWinter · nightThe power to reflect and seep in

Generating and controlling — not good and bad

The five energies interact in two ways.

Generating cycle (sangsaeng 相生) — the relationship of giving birth

Wood feeds Fire → Fire feeds Earth → Earth feeds Metal → Metal feeds Water → Water feeds Wood. Wood burns into fire, the ash fire leaves becomes soil, metal comes out of the earth, water beads on metal, and water makes trees grow — that's the cycle.

Controlling cycle (sanggeuk 相剋) — the relationship of restraint

Wood controls Earth · Earth controls Water · Water controls Fire · Fire controls Metal · Metal controls Wood. Trees take nutrients from the soil, soil dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood.

The controlling cycle isn't bad. When a fire gets too strong you need water, and when a tree grows wild you have to prune it. The controlling cycle is a mechanism that reins in excess. In reading a Saju, too, the question is: “Does this person need energy that pushes them forward right now, or energy that steadies them?”

These generating and controlling relations are the backbone of the Ten Gods. What gives birth to you is the Resource star, what you give birth to is the Output star, what you overcome is the Wealth star, and what overcomes you is the Officer star — they're names given to the five relationships among the elements.

Finding the element your Saju lacks

The method is simple: count the Eight Characters of your Saju by element. For example, like this.

Wood 2
Fire 3
Earth 2
Metal 1
Water 0← most lacking

It's actually rare for all five elements to be evenly spread across the Eight Characters. Missing one isn't a problem — it just means you look after that kind of strength from somewhere else.

In the example above, the Water energy is empty, so this is someone who consciously needs things like a habit of pausing a beat to think, time alone to sort things out, and room to step back flexibly. There's plenty of Fire, so the drive is strong, but there's nothing in the structure to cool it down.

The easiest way to balance — your meals

There are many ways to fill in an element — colors, directions, activities — but the one that repeats every day without any burden is food. You have to decide on meals twice a day anyway.

Missing elementMenus like theseThe tone you can expect
WoodNamul bibimbap (rice with seasoned greens), spinach doenjang soup, perilla-leaf rice wraps, whole-grain saladSupports the drive to get started
FireKimchi stew, spicy stir-fried pork, tomato pasta or stew, tteokbokkiWarms up your energy
EarthDoenjang stew, curry rice, sweet pumpkin porridge, potato sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup)Settles the mind
MetalBean sprout gukbap (soup with rice), radish soup, tofu dishes, chicken gomtang (clear chicken soup)Sharpens focus
WaterSeafood sundubu (soft tofu stew), seaweed soup, clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), black bean riceAdds flexibility

An easy way to remember it: Wood is leafy greens, Fire is red and spicy food, Earth is root vegetables and doenjang, Metal is white foods and broths, and Water is black foods and things from the sea.

Honestly — how far should you trust this?

Let me be clear here. We don't claim that Five Elements food heals the body. That's the domain of medicine, and health issues should be discussed with a professional.

So why use it? Because it's genuinely useful in these ways.

There are two ways to use Saju: as a tool for confirming your fate, or as a clue for deciding what to do today. Mutal Unnie is the latter.

If calculating it every day is a hassle

Enter your birth date in Mutal Unnie and it counts your Five Elements distribution automatically and shows today's lunch and dinner menu, matched to your most lacking element, right on the rhythm card. Even though your lacking element doesn't change, the menu rotates every few days, so it won't keep suggesting the same thing.

The rhythm card also shows today's overall score and gauges for love, work and condition. It's all free, and every time you open the app, it's refreshed for that day.

FAQ

Is it always right to fill in a missing element?

It's a general principle, but there are exceptions. Depending on the overall structure of a Saju, easing off what's in excess can be better than filling in what's missing. That said, for light everyday use, “looking after your scarcest element” is enough.

Can I fill it in with colors or directions, too?

Yes. Wood is green, Fire red, Earth yellow and brown, Metal white, and Water black and navy. You can bring them in through the colors of your clothes or accessories, and for directions, Wood = east, Fire = south, Earth = center, Metal = west and Water = north. These are lighter options than food.

Does my Five Elements distribution change if I don't know my birth time?

The two characters of the hour pillar drop out, so you count six characters instead of eight. The broad tendencies come out similar, but close calls can flip. For details, see When you don't know your birth time.

How are the Five Elements different from the Ten Gods?

The Five Elements are the ingredients, and the Ten Gods are the relationships those ingredients form with you. The same Water energy becomes a Resource star (filling you up) if your Day Master is Wood, and an Officer star (keeping you in check) if it's Fire. Learn the Five Elements first and then move on to the Ten Gods, and everything clicks much faster.
