The 10 Ten Gods (十神)
— The Names That Set the Tone of Your Day

Saju basics · · 7 min read · Updated

In short

The Ten Gods are ten names for the relationship between 'you' and the other characters. They're not good or bad but differences in tone — they tell you whether today is a day for pushing ahead, filling up or treading carefully.

Why do we need as many as ten?

If the iljin is the name tag for today, the Ten Gods tell you what that name tag means for you. That's why the same day reads differently for different people.

The reference point is the Day Master (ilgan 日干): the top character of the day you were born, the character that stands for 'you' in Saju. Compare the characters of today's iljin with your Day Master and you get a relationship; the name given to that relationship is a Ten God.

First five families, then ten

The Ten Gods are set in two steps. First, they're divided into five families by the generating and controlling relations of the Five Elements.

RelationshipNameFeel
Same element as meCompanion starsYour own pace · competition
Element that generates meResource starsBeing replenished · learning · recovery
Element I generateOutput starsExpression · making things · ease
Element I controlWealth starsOpportunity · results · movement
Element that controls meOfficer starsDiscipline · tension · responsibility

Then each is split in two by whether yin and yang are the same or different. That gives 5 × 2 = 10, and the Ten Gods are complete.

If yin and yang are the same — Companion · Eating God · Indirect Wealth · Indirect Officer · Indirect Resource
If they're different — Rob Wealth · Hurting Officer · Direct Wealth · Direct Officer · Direct Resource

Broadly, names with 'Indirect (pyeon 偏)' are the wider-ranging, more changeable kind, and names with 'Direct (jeong 正)' are the steadier, more regular kind.

Using only five families creates a problem. Among the heavenly stems, Gap and Eul are both Wood and Byeong and Jeong are both Fire, so the same tone would come up two days in a row. Only by splitting by yin and yang as well do you get a different tone every day over ten days. That's why there are ten.

The 10 Ten Gods, read as a day

Same tone as me — Companion (Bigyeon 比肩) · Rob Wealth (Geopjae 劫財)

Companion
A day when you can go at your own pace. No need to worry what others think — a good day to take care of your own long-postponed tasks first. Even if things are noisy around you, you're at the center.
Rob Wealth
A day when your competitive streak rises. It's best spent beating yesterday's you rather than other people. Just watch out for spending out of pride.

The tone I give out — Eating God (Siksin 食神) · Hurting Officer (Sanggwan 傷官)

Eating God
A day with room to breathe. Eating well and laughing a lot is how to run today. Good for making things with your hands, and what you do while enjoying yourself goes best.
Hurting Officer
A day when your wit sparkles. Write down every idea, but choose your words once before you say them. Expressiveness and sharpness are both running high.

The tone I gain — Indirect Wealth (Pyeonjae 偏財) · Direct Wealth (Jeongjae 正財)

Indirect Wealth
A day when opportunities brush past. The more you move, the more you notice. There are hints on paths you don't usually take and in messages you don't usually send.
Direct Wealth
A day when things steadily build up. Work you've done comes back as results. Rather than starting something new, stack up what's certain, one by one.

The tone that tightens around me — Indirect Officer (Pyeongwan 偏官) · Direct Officer (Jeonggwan 正官)

Indirect Officer
A day when you feel pressure. Start several things and they'll all wobble. It's better to pick just one and tackle it head-on.
Direct Officer
A good day for recognition. Doing things by the book actually makes you stand out. A day when principles are on your side.

The tone that fills me — Indirect Resource (Pyeonin 偏印) · Direct Resource (Jeongin 正印)

Indirect Resource
A day when your intuition is sharp. It's good to make time to sort things out on your own. If something feels off, it usually is.
Direct Resource
A day of being filled up. Good for learning and recovery. The flow is backing you, so don't turn down help.

Are there good and bad Ten Gods?

No. It's a difference in tone, not a ranking.

Even Indirect Officer, often seen as a burden, works in your favor on days that need focus. There are things like exams or deadlines where tension actually helps. Conversely, even the easygoing Eating God can make you slack off when a deadline is right around the corner.

So the practical question isn't “what's today's Ten God?” but “does what I need to do today fit today's tone?”

If it fits, push ahead; if not, change how you do it. If you have an ideas meeting on an Indirect Officer day, push one well-prepared proposal precisely instead of brainstorming; if you need to review a contract on a Hurting Officer day, check the numbers twice.

The same Ten God comes back every ten days

The heavenly stem of the iljin runs on a 10-day cycle. So the stem-based Ten God also comes back every ten days, and the nine days in between all have different tones. Keep a log for about 2 weeks and you'll start to notice patterns like “oh, this is how I am on days with this tone.”

Mutal Unnie does this calculation automatically every day and shows it as a rhythm card. No need to memorize the names of the Ten Gods — just sentences like “today's a day when expressing yourself goes smoothly.” And whether those forecasts actually came true is scored every week in the Hit Ledger.

FAQ

Do I need to know my whole Saju to understand the Ten Gods?

No. If you know just the one character of your Day Master, today's Ten God follows right away. The Day Master can be calculated from your date of birth alone, so it doesn't matter if you don't know your birth time.

Which of the iljin's two characters should I look at?

Both. The top character (heavenly stem) is closer to the tone of what happens on the surface, and the bottom character (earthly branch) to the energy supporting it from within. Mutal Unnie also calculates them separately: the stem for the character of the day, the branch for the tone of feelings and relationships.

I've heard my birth chart has Ten Gods too?

That's right. Each of the eight characters in your birth chart also gets a Ten God, based on your Day Master. That's about your inborn tendencies, while this article covers the Ten God attached to today. It's the same tool, used on the scale of a lifetime or of a single day.

On an Indirect Officer day, is it better to just rest?

Resting isn't the answer. Indirect Officer is also a day when it's easy to focus, so if you narrow what you've got going down to one thing and push it, you tend to get good results. What to avoid isn't work, but taking on several things at once.
