Today's lucky color
— dressing by the Five Elements
Today's lucky color is set by the element of the day's iljin. The color families are green for Wood, red for Fire, yellow and brown for Earth, white and silver for Metal, and navy and black for Water. For example, October 5, 2026 is an Imja day, so it's a Water (水) day, and its color is deep purple-blue. Just find your date in the calendar below.

What decides the lucky color?
In Saju, the lucky color usually comes from the element of the day's iljin. Wood is green, Fire red, Earth yellow and brown, Metal white, and Water black and navy. These are long-standing pairings known as obangsaek (the five traditional colors), so the color families are the same wherever you look.
The lucky color on Mutal Unnie's rhythm card follows the element of the day's Earthly Branch (the lower character of the iljin). For example, October 5, 2026 is an Imja (壬子) day, and its branch, Ja (子), is Water (水). So the day's color is in the navy and black family, and based on the order of dates within it, deep purple-blue comes up.
What are the lucky colors and numbers for each element?
Each element is paired with one color family and two numbers. The numbers are a traditional assignment from the Hado (河圖, the River Chart). Within each family, Mutal Unnie rotates seven colors by date so you don't get the same color every day.
| Element | Color family | Days | Mutal Unnie's 7 colors (rotating by date) | Numbers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Green · teal | In · Myo days | ● Fresh spring green · ● Deep forest green · ● Sage green · ● Olive · ● Pale mint · ● Teal · ● Lime green | 3 · 8 |
| Fire | Red · coral · pink | Sa · O days | ● Apricot coral · ● Burgundy wine · ● Sunset orange · ● Cherry red · ● Rose pink · ● Tomato red · ● Peach | 2 · 7 |
| Earth | Yellow · beige · brown | Jin · Sul · Chuk · Mi days | ● Warm sand · ● Mustard yellow · ● Camel brown · ● Terracotta · ● Beige cream · ● Yellow ochre · ● Khaki brown | 5 · 10 |
| Metal | White · silver · gold | Sin · Yu days | ● Ivory white · ● Silver gray · ● Pearl white · ● Platinum · ● Champagne gold · ● Steel blue-gray · ● Moonlight white | 4 · 9 |
| Water | Navy · black · deep blue | Hae · Ja days | ● Deep navy · ● Midnight black · ● Ocean blue · ● Ink blue · ● Charcoal gray · ● Deep purple-blue · ● Dawn blue | 1 · 6 |
The “Days” column is based on the Earthly Branch of the day's iljin. Earth has four branches (Jin, Sul, Chuk and Mi), so Earth days come around most often. Of the 88 days from October 5 to December 31, 2026, 29 are Earth days, and each of the other elements gets 14–16 days.

Is the lucky color the same for everyone?
The color itself is the same. After all, the day's iljin is the same for everyone. What differs from person to person is what kind of day it is for you. Take the Imja day of October 5, 2026: its Heavenly Stem, Im Water (壬水), is an Indirect Officer that keeps you in check if your Day Master is Byeong Fire, and an Indirect Resource that backs you up if your Day Master is Gap Wood.
That's why Mutal Unnie's rhythm card shows the color together with a one-line note based on the relationship between your Day Master and the day's iljin (the Ten Gods). Think of the color as everyone's weather, and the Ten God as how you meet that weather. I've explained how iljin differs from today's fortune in What is iljin?.
Can I wear the color of an element my Saju lacks?
Of course. Apart from the day's color, keeping the color of an element that's scarce in your birth chart close by is also a long-standing practice. If your chart has no Fire (火) at all, keep one red-toned item; if it has no Water (水), one navy item, and so on.
You can check which elements you lack in the Five Elements distribution of your Eight Characters with the Manseryeok calculator. Mutal Unnie uses those missing elements to pick today's menu for you every day. Think of it as filling them in with your clothes for color, and at the table for the menu.
How can I use lucky colors without it becoming a burden?
One item is enough. No need to change your whole outfit — something small like socks, a hair tie, your phone wallpaper or a tumbler will do. On a nerve-racking day like a job interview or a blind date, bringing one accessory in that day's color family is just right.
I won't tell you that a color changes the outcome. But the 2 seconds you spend choosing a color in the morning become a moment to be mindful of today. It's the same reason Mutal Unnie suggests one small action every day.
Today's task is just one thing: find tomorrow's color in the calendar above and set out one item in that color family by the front door.

How is today's lucky color decided?
It's set by the element of the day's iljin: Wood green, Fire red, Earth yellow and brown, Metal white, Water navy and black. Within each color family, Mutal Unnie rotates 7 colors by date.
What is the lucky number?
It's a traditional assignment from the Hado (河圖, the River Chart): Wood 3·8, Fire 2·7, Earth 5·10, Metal 4·9, Water 1·6. You look at the two numbers for the element of the day's iljin.
Is the lucky color different for each person?
The day's color is the same for everyone. What differs from person to person is which of the Ten Gods that day is for your Day Master. You can also make a point of keeping the color of an element your birth chart lacks.
Will wearing my lucky color improve my luck?
There's no evidence that a color changes outcomes. Instead, the 2 seconds it takes to choose a color become a moment to be mindful of your day. Use it lightly, with a single accessory.
