There's no single “good day”
Let's clear this up before we start. There's no day that's good for everything. A day good for a contract may be flat for a business opening, and a day good for moving may not suit a job interview.
So the accurate phrase is “a day that suits this task.” Date selection isn't about finding an all-purpose good day — it's about choosing the tone that fits your purpose.
Order first — picking the date first fails
This is the most common mistake. If you pick good days first and then try to fit the contract, the movers and the other party's schedule around them, it almost never works.
The order is the reverse: lock in what you can't change first, then pick the best day within the range that's left. Date selection isn't a tool for creating candidates but a tool for choosing among them.
- Lock in what you can't changeFinal-payment day, wedding venue availability, the other party's schedule, hospital appointments. Anything involving someone else goes here.
- Pull out the possible date rangeUsually 2–4 weeks come out. That's the reality.
- Remove days that clash with your zodiac animalThis alone is half of date selection.
- Choose the tone that fits the purposeFrom the remaining candidates.
- Confirm it as an eventDon't stop at choosing; it only means something if you can pull it up again as the day approaches.
Son-eomneun-nal — the easiest standard
Son-eomneun-nal are days whose lunar date ends in 9 or 0 — the lunar 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th. On these days Son, the spirit said to roam the directions and cause mischief, goes up to the sky and is in none of the directions, so moving in any direction is considered fine.
All you need is a calendar, so it's the easiest. But it applies to everyone equally, so there's no individual difference.
| Year | Son-eomneun-nal | See now |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 68 days in total | Full year · By month |
| 2028 | 68 days in total | Full year · By month |
Something that widens your options — even if it isn't Son-eomneun-nal, it's fine as long as you avoid the direction you're moving in. On lunar days 1 and 2, Son is in the east; on 3 and 4, the west; on 5 and 6, the south; on 7 and 8, the north. If your new home is to the north, you only need to avoid lunar days 7 and 8.
Avoiding days that clash with your zodiac animal
The first thing removed in date selection is clash (沖) — the colliding relationship between characters directly opposite each other among the twelve Earthly Branches.
| My zodiac animal | Days to avoid | My zodiac animal | Days to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rat (Ja) | Horse (O) days | Horse (O) | Rat (Ja) days |
| Ox (Chuk) | Sheep (Mi) days | Sheep (Mi) | Ox (Chuk) days |
| Tiger (In) | Monkey (Sin) days | Monkey (Sin) | Tiger (In) days |
| Rabbit (Myo) | Rooster (Yu) days | Rooster (Yu) | Rabbit (Myo) days |
| Dragon (Jin) | Dog (Sul) days | Dog (Sul) | Dragon (Jin) days |
| Snake (Sa) | Pig (Hae) days | Pig (Hae) | Snake (Sa) days |
It's a relationship that comes once every 12 days, so the odds of actually hitting one are low. Keeping just this one rule makes you feel much more at ease. On the monthly Son-eomneun-nal pages, we've calculated and marked the zodiac animals to avoid for each date.
What to look at for each purpose
Even on the same day, the favorable tone differs depending on what you plan to do.
| What you plan to do | The tone you need | Well-matched Ten Gods | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moving house | Stability · settling in | Direct Resource · Direct Wealth | Moving date |
| Wedding | Being joined · harmony | Direct Officer · Direct Resource | Wedding date |
| Contracts · settlements | Care · certainty | Direct Wealth · Direct Officer | Date selection basics |
| Business opening · launch | Spreading outward · drawing people | Eating God · Indirect Wealth | Date selection basics |
| Job interview · presentation | Expression lands well | Eating God · Hurting Officer | The night before an interview |
| Exam | Focus · precision | Indirect Officer · Direct Officer | The day before an exam |
| Blind date | Expression · attraction | Eating God · Indirect Wealth | Blind date day |
What to consider at the year level — Samjae
For big events like weddings, some families check Samjae. It's a period that comes for 3 years in every 12 for each zodiac group.
- 2025–2027 — Pig, Rabbit and Sheep (2027 is the final year, leaving Samjae)
- 2028–2030 — Tiger, Horse and Dog (2028 is the first year, entering Samjae)
But avoiding all 3 years pushes things back a long way. Even traditionally, many people compromise by being careful only in the first year, entering Samjae. Details are in Samjae explained.
When you can't choose the date at all
The most common case is having no choice because the final-payment day is set or a contract is involved. Here's what you can do then.
- At least choose the time of day — base it on the moment things start, like signing the contract or the moving truck setting off
- Separate the day you move your things from the day you sleep there — this uses the view that a move counts from the first night someone sleeps in the new home
- Stop researching — if you keep searching whether an already-fixed date is lucky or unlucky, all you're left with is anxiety
The practical steps when you can't get a good date (including move-in registration and the loan disbursement date) are in When your moving date doesn't line up.
Being honest about date selection
I won't tell you that date selection changes the outcome. It's not something that can be verified.
But there is something you can actually confirm: in the process of setting a date, you take one more look at the task itself. To choose a contract date you reread the terms; to choose a moving date you check the order of the final payment and the loan. That process reduces mistakes.
There's also the effect of committing your heart to the day you've chosen. With the sense that “this is the day I picked,” you're less shaken when it arrives.
Don't just leave the day you chose
The last step of date selection is turning the chosen day into an event. If you just pick a date and close the page, nothing is different when the day arrives.
In Mutal Unnie, ‘Find a good day’ gives you candidate dates when you enter a period and a purpose, and the day you pick is added as an event as is. As the day approaches, on the evening before, it sums up what works in your favor that day and where things may easily go off track as one thing to prepare.

In what order do I choose a good day?
① Fix what you can't change (final-payment day, wedding venue) → ② pull out the possible date range → ③ remove days that clash with your zodiac animal → ④ choose the tone that fits the purpose. If you pick good days first and try to fit everything around them, it usually fails.
How is Son-eomneun-nal different from date selection?
Son-eomneun-nal is a direction-based idea set by the lunar date alone and the same for everyone. Date selection also takes into account your Saju and the nature of what you plan to do.
Are the criteria different for a moving date and a wedding date?
Yes. Moving is about movement and direction, so it mainly looks at Son-eomneun-nal and direction; a wedding is about being joined together, so it looks for a tone that favors harmony. For weddings, year-level conditions like both families' schedules and Samjae are considered too.
What are the days that clash with my zodiac animal?
Days carrying the character directly opposite yours among the twelve Earthly Branches: Rat↔Horse, Ox↔Sheep, Tiger↔Monkey, Rabbit↔Rooster, Dragon↔Dog, Snake↔Pig. If you're a Rabbit, for example, you avoid Rooster days. It's once every 12 days, so the odds of actually hitting one are low.
What if there are no good days at all?
If you look for a day that meets every condition, it's normal for no candidates to remain. The task is to choose a relatively better day, not a perfect one. If you narrow down only by avoiding direct clash days, some usually turn up.
What if the date is already set and it comes out as not good?
If you keep looking up whether a date you can't change is lucky or unlucky, all you're left with is anxiety. It's more practical to redirect that energy to what to prepare on the day. That's exactly what Mutal Unnie does for events that are already set.
