How Son-eomneun-nal is determined
The rule is simple. Days whose lunar date ends in 9 or 0 are Son-eomneun-nal — that is, lunar days 9, 10, 19, 20, 29 and 30.
"Son" refers to a spirit said to roam the directions according to the date and get in the way. It was believed to be in the east on lunar days 1 and 2, the west on 3 and 4, the south on 5 and 6, and the north on 7 and 8, then go up to the sky on 9 and 10 and be absent from every direction.
| Lunar date ending | Direction where Son is | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 2 | East | Avoid moving east |
| 3, 4 | West | Avoid moving west |
| 5, 6 | South | Avoid moving south |
| 7, 8 | North | Avoid moving north |
| 9, 0 | None (in the sky) | Son-eomneun-nal |
This tells you something useful: even on a day that isn't Son-eomneun-nal, it's fine as long as you avoid the direction you're heading in. If your new home is to the north, you only need to avoid lunar days 7 and 8. Seen this way, the number of usable days grows a lot.
What's different from 2027?
Son-eomneun-nal itself follows a lunar rule, so it's set the same way every year. But because the Gregorian dates and weekdays shift every year, the number that land on weekends changes from year to year. Compare with 2027 and you'll see the difference.
Is there anything to check besides Son-eomneun-nal?
Son-eomneun-nal is a standard that applies equally to everyone. When choosing a date with Saju, you add the relationship between your own chart and that day. I've covered the details in What is taegil?.
Mutal Unnie's "Find a good day" looks at Son-eomneun-nal and your Saju together to pick candidates, and you can add the day you choose as an event. Adding events is free; Full Care, which includes an evening-before briefing and a day-of guide, is unlocked with Bok.

How many Son-eomneun-nal days are there in 2028?
There are 68 days in total in 2028. Depending on the length of the lunar months, each month has between 5 and 7.
What does Son-eomneun-nal mean?
"Son" is a spirit said to roam the directions and get in the way. On lunar days ending in 9 and 10, it was believed to go up to the sky and be absent from every direction, so those days became ones when you can move in any direction.
Is Son-eomneun-nal on the same dates every year?
No. It follows the lunar calendar, so the Gregorian dates and weekdays change every year. In lunar terms, though, it's always the 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th, so it comes around two days at a time, every ten days.
Can I plan next year's move in advance?
Yes. Son-eomneun-nal follows a lunar rule, so it can be calculated years ahead. The actual date, though, depends on your final-payment (closing) day, so the realistic approach is to use it to narrow down candidates once your contract is confirmed.
