How Son-eomneun-nal is determined

The rule is surprisingly simple. Days whose lunar date ends in 9 or 0 are Son-eomneun-nal — that is, lunar days 9, 10, 19, 20, 29 and 30.

"Son" refers to a spirit said to roam the directions according to the date and get in the way. It was believed to be in the east on lunar days 1 and 2, the west on 3 and 4, the south on 5 and 6, and the north on 7 and 8, then go up to the sky on 9 and 10 and be absent from every direction. That's why those two days became ones when you can move in any direction.

Lunar date endingDirection where Son isCategory
1, 2EastAvoid moving east
3, 4WestAvoid moving west
5, 6SouthAvoid moving south
7, 8NorthAvoid moving north
9, 0None (in the sky)Son-eomneun-nal

This tells you something useful: even on a day that isn't Son-eomneun-nal, it's fine as long as you avoid the direction you're heading in. If your new home is north of where you live now, you only need to avoid lunar days 7 and 8. Seen this way, the number of usable days grows a lot.

What to know when moving on Son-eomneun-nal

Is there anything to check besides Son-eomneun-nal?

Son-eomneun-nal is a standard that applies equally to everyone. Because it's based on the date alone it's easy to use, but by the same token it doesn't account for individual differences.

When choosing a date with Saju, you add the relationship between your own chart and that day. Even among Son-eomneun-nal, some days clash with your Day Master and some support it. I've covered the details in What is taegil?.

Mutal Unnie's "Find a good day" looks at Son-eomneun-nal and your Saju together to pick candidates. You can then add the day you choose as an event. Adding events is free, and if you unlock Full Care with Bok, you get an evening-before briefing and a day-of guide.

FAQ

How many Son-eomneun-nal days are there in 2027?

There are 68 days in total in 2027. Depending on the length of the lunar months, each month has between 5 and 7.

What does Son-eomneun-nal mean?

"Son" is a spirit said to roam the directions and get in the way. On lunar days ending in 9 and 10, it was believed to go up to the sky and be absent from every direction, so those days became ones when you can move in any direction.

Is Son-eomneun-nal on the same dates every month?

No. It follows the lunar calendar, so the Gregorian dates change every month. In lunar terms, though, it's always the 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th, so it comes around two days at a time, roughly every ten days.

Do weddings or business openings also need to be on Son-eomneun-nal?

Son-eomneun-nal is originally about movement and direction, so it fits moving house best. Weddings and openings are more about beginnings than movement, so traditionally other criteria are considered alongside it. Of course, there's no harm in taking it into account.
