Why is it confusing when the new year starts?

Because there are three standards. January 1 on the Gregorian calendar, Seollal on the lunar calendar, and Ipchun, used in Saju — all three are called the new year.

In 2027, January 1 to February 3 is 2027 on the Gregorian calendar but still the Byeong-o year in Saju. The Jeongmi year starts on February 4 at 10:46. That's why people born in between get confused about their zodiac animal. More on this in The Saju new year begins at Ipchun.

What are the Samjae zodiac animals in 2027?

The Pig, Rabbit and Sheep are in Samjae. It began in 2025, and 2027 is the last year (leaving Samjae).

Samjae is a cycle that comes around for 3 years in every 12. It doesn't mean bad things are fated to happen; it's closer to a custom of seeing it as a time of frequent change and not rushing big decisions. Next in line are the Tiger, Horse and Dog in 2028–2030.
