2027 age table
— zodiac animal · international age · year-based age
Your international age in 2027 is 2027 − your birth year, minus one if your birthday hasn't come yet. Someone born in 1991 is 36 (35 before their birthday). Children born in 2020 start elementary school in 2027, and those born in 1967 celebrate hwangap.

How old will I be in 2027?
Subtract your birth year from 2027. If your birthday has passed, that number is your international age; if not, subtract one. If you were born in 1991, you're 36 after your birthday and 35 before it.
Since June 2023, age for administrative and legal purposes has been standardized on international age. So the number officially used in 2027 is the “International age” column in the table below. In everyday life, though, year-based age and Korean counting age are still used alongside it.
| Name | Calculation | Born in 1991, in 2027 | Where it's used |
|---|---|---|---|
| International age | 2027 − birth year if your birthday has passed; otherwise −1 | 36 / 35 before birthday | Law, administration, hospitals — the official standard |
| Year-based age | 2027 − birth year | 36 | Military service, Juvenile Protection Act, school grades |
| Korean counting age | 2027 − birth year + 1 | 37 | Everyday conversation — not an official standard |

Rows with a light shade are Sheep years. Since 2027 is the Year of the Sheep, these people are in their own zodiac year. People born in 1967 turn 60 in international age in 2027 and celebrate hwangap — the same Jeongmi year they were born in has come back after 60 years.
How old are ppareun-nyeonsaeng in 2027?
Age is calculated exactly the same as for everyone else. Ppareun-nyeonsaeng was a matter of the school-year system, not an age system. It let children born in January and February start school a year early, and it was abolished from 2009.
So the ppareun-nyeonsaeng still around today are people born before 2002. Even if someone born in February 1991 was in the same school year as people born in 1990, their international age in 2027 is calculated as someone born in 1991.
In Saju, it's a different story again. Because the Saju year changes at Ipchun, people born between January and early February have a different zodiac animal on the calendar than in Saju. Ipchun in 2027 is February 4 at 10:46 a.m., so babies born in 2027 before then are not Sheep but Horse.
What are the school grades in 2027?
Children enter elementary school in the year they turn 7 in year-based age. Children starting elementary school in March 2027 were born in 2020 (the Gyeongja year, Year of the Rat).
| School grade in 2027 | Birth year | Zodiac animal | Year-based age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elementary grade 1 | 2020 | Rat | 7 |
| Elementary grade 6 | 2015 | Sheep | 12 |
| Middle school year 1 | 2014 | Horse | 13 |
| Middle school year 3 | 2012 | Dragon | 15 |
| High school year 1 | 2011 | Rabbit | 16 |
| High school year 3 — Suneung (college entrance exam) | 2009 | Ox | 18 |
High school seniors taking the Suneung (for the 2028 academic year) in November 2027 were born in 2009, the Gichuk year, Year of the Ox. What helps on the day before the exam is written up in The day before and the day of an exam.
Why do the sixty Gapja come around every 60 years?
If you pair the 10 Heavenly Stems with the 12 Earthly Branches one by one and keep cycling, you first return to the start at 60, the least common multiple of 10 and 12. So the same stem-branch pair as your birth year comes back after 60 years — and that's hwangap.
Your zodiac animal alone comes around every 12 years, but it takes 60 years for the stem-branch pair to match. A Sheep born in 1991 is from the Sinmi (辛未) year, and a Sheep born in 2027 is from the Jeongmi year, so even though both are Sheep, the first character differs. The Sinmi year won't come again until 2051.
What do the characters of my Saju look like?

Get the app for iPhone & AndroidCan I find out the weekday or the stem-branch pair of the day I was born?
Yes. A manseryeok is a calendar with two characters (the iljin) attached to every date, so the stem-branch pair, weekday and lunar date of your birth day can all be calculated.
The year's stem-branch pair is in the table above, but the stem-branch pair of your birth day (your day pillar) can't be put in a table. It runs on a 60-day cycle, so it differs for every date. The characters that point to “you” in Saju are exactly this day pillar, so it matters far more than the year.
FAQ
How old is someone born in 1991 in 2027?
36 in international age after their birthday, or 35 before it. Year-based age is 36, and Korean counting age is 37. The official standard is international age.
Which birth year starts elementary school in 2027?
Children born in 2020 — the Gyeongja year, the Year of the Rat. Elementary school entry is based on the year a child turns 7 in year-based age.
How do “ppareun-nyeonsaeng” (early-year births) count their age?
Exactly the same as everyone else. Ppareun-nyeonsaeng was a school-year system, not an age system, and it was abolished in 2009. Someone born in February 1991 counts as born in 1991, whatever school year they were in.
Which birth year celebrates hwangap (the 60th birthday) in 2027?
People born in 1967. 1967 was also a Jeongmi (丁未) year, so it has exactly the same stem-branch pair as 2027. It takes 60 years for the stem-branch pair to repeat, which is why it's called hwangap.
