Strong vs. Weak Day Master
— Three Steps to Tell How Strong Your Chart Is

Saju basics · · 8 min read

In short

Whether your Day Master is strong or weak comes down to which outnumber the other: characters that support your Day Master (you) or characters that drain it. Count three things — seasonal support (month branch), branch support (day branch) and numerical support (the remaining characters) — and the direction becomes clear. A strong chart isn't a good chart, and a weak one isn't bad — it's simply the starting point for finding the element that restores balance (the Useful God).

What does strong or weak actually measure?

It measures the strength of your Day Master. The Day Master is the top character of your birth day, the one character out of eight that stands for 'you'. Strong vs. weak is about how much the other seven characters support this Day Master, or how much they drain from it.

If supporting characters outnumber the others, it's called a strong Day Master (singang 身強); if draining ones do, a weak Day Master (sinyak 身弱). If it doesn't tip far either way, it's called balanced (junghwa 中和).

There's another reason this matters. When looking for the Useful God — which decides “what energy do I need?” in Saju — most methods start by judging whether the Day Master is strong or weak. The basic direction is to drain a strong one and replenish a weak one.

How do you tell supporting characters from draining ones?

By their relationship to the Day Master. You can simply use the five families of the Ten Gods.

Supporting
Companion stars (same element as you) and Resource stars (the element that generates you). Characters that add allies or feed you.
Draining
Output stars (the element you generate — strength flows out), Wealth stars (the element you control — you have to spend strength), Officer stars (the element that controls you — it presses on you).

Here's how it looks for each Day Master element.

Your Day MasterSupporting elements (Companion & Resource stars)Draining elements (Output, Wealth & Officer stars)
Gap · Eul (Wood)Wood · WaterFire · Earth · Metal
Byeong · Jeong (Fire)Fire · WoodEarth · Metal · Water
Mu · Gi (Earth)Earth · FireMetal · Water · Wood
Gyeong · Sin (Metal)Metal · EarthWater · Wood · Fire
Im · Gye (Water)Water · MetalWood · Fire · Earth

As for the elements of the branches: In and Myo are Wood, Sa and O are Fire, Sin and Yu are Metal, Hae and Ja are Water, and Jin, Sul, Chuk and Mi are Earth. Of the five elements, two support and three drain, so on numbers alone a weak Day Master might seem more common — but in practice each position carries a different weight, so it doesn't come down to a simple count. Gauging that weight is what the next three steps are for.

What are seasonal, branch and numerical support?

It's a method of looking at where your Day Master draws strength from, split across three positions.

StepPositionQuestionWeight
Seasonal support (deungnyeong 得令)Month branch — the bottom character of your birth monthDoes the season you were born in support you?Greatest
Branch support (deukji 得地)Day branch — the bottom character of your birth dayDoes the seat you sit on support you?Next
Numerical support (deukse 得勢)The other five characters — year stem, year branch, month stem, hour stem, hour branchAre there many allies around you?Judged by count

The month branch weighs the most because it's the season. Even the same tree (Gap Wood) finds itself in a completely different environment depending on whether it was born in winter, when water is plentiful, or in autumn, when metal is hard. Saju months change not on the 1st but at the solar-term entry time, so be sure to check your month branch with a manseryeok.

A rule to use as a starting point — if you have two or more of the three, the chart leans strong; if one or none, it leans weak. However, if you have branch and numerical support but not seasonal support, it's often treated as borderline. That's how much weight the month branch alone carries.

Shall we judge an example chart together?

This is a hypothetical chart made up for illustration: a Gap Wood Day Master born in the depths of winter (the Rat month). Traditionally, Saju is written from right to left in the order year, month, day, hour.

PositionHour pillarDay pillarMonth pillarYear pillar
Heavenly stemGyeong (Metal) · Officer −Gap (Wood) · youIm (Water) · Resource +Im (Water) · Resource +
Earthly BranchO (Fire) · Output −O (Fire) · Output −Ja (Water) · Resource +In (Wood) · Companion +
  1. Seasonal support — the month branch Ja (子) is Water, a Resource that generates Gap Wood. Gained.
  2. Branch support — the day branch O (午) is Fire, an Output through which Gap Wood's strength drains away. Not gained.
  3. Numerical support — of the other five characters, three support (year stem Im, year branch In, month stem Im) and two drain (hour stem Gyeong, hour branch O). 3 to 2, so gained.

With two of the three (seasonal and numerical support), it leans strong. But the judgment doesn't end there. This chart has three Waters in midwinter, so the tree is cold and damp. Looking only at the amount of strength, the answer is “drain it,” but factoring in temperature, another answer appears: “warm it up.” Checking whether both answers point to the same element is the next step in finding your Useful God.

Why do apps give different strong/weak results?

Because there's no single agreed standard for judging it. The closer a chart is to the borderline, the more apps disagree. They usually diverge on four points.

Month branch weighting
Apps that use a score give the month branch more weight than other positions. The multiplier differs from app to app, so the month branch alone can flip the conclusion.
Counting hidden stems
Whether the heavenly stems hidden inside the branches (hidden stems) are counted or not. For example, Jin (辰) looks like Earth on the outside but contains Eul Wood and Gye Water, so it can serve as a root for a Gap Wood Day Master.
Combinations and clashes
If you consider elements transformed or bound by stem combinations or branch combinations and clashes, the count changes. Whether and under what conditions to apply them differs by school.
Input corrections
Cases where the hour or day pillar itself changes, such as daylight saving time, former standard time and births at 11 p.m. When the characters change, so does the strength.

So rather than taking a number like “strong, 62 points” from one app at face value, the most reliable thing is to count seasonal, branch and numerical support yourself once. You only need to check three boxes, so 5 minutes is plenty.

You can pull up your Eight Characters for free in the Manseryeok calculator. It also shows the Ten Gods, Five Elements distribution and hidden stems, so set it beside the table above and count. Why even manseryeok tools give different results is covered separately in Why manseryeok apps give different results.

How do extremely strong, extremely weak and balanced differ?

Strength comes in degrees too.

CategoryWhat it looks likeHow it's commonly read
BalancedSupporting and draining characters are about evenNot tilted to either side, so it's seen as less swayed by the ups and downs of luck
Strong · weakTilted one way, but characters on the other side are present tooLook for the element that drains a strong chart or replenishes a weak one
Extremely strong · extremely weakAlmost every character is concentrated on one sideSome schools see it as following that dominant energy rather than going against it (the follow pattern, jonggyeok 從格)

Charts pushed to an extreme are an area where even experienced readers often disagree. If you think your chart might fall here, don't hold on to a single conclusion — compare several interpretations. You might also find when to use a Saju app vs. a Saju consultation helpful.

How can you use this in everyday life?

It's most practical as a hint for understanding your tendencies. Either way, there are strengths and things to watch out for.

FAQ

Is a strong Day Master a better chart than a weak one?

No. Strength isn't a ranking but the direction in which the balance tips. A strong Day Master does well by spending energy; a weak one does well by receiving it. Either way, it's just the starting point for finding the element that restores balance (the Useful God).

Can't you judge whether a Day Master is strong or weak without a birth time?

You can roughly. The month and day branches, which carry the most weight, are available without the hour, so seasonal and branch support can be read as usual, and numerical support is read without the two hour-pillar characters. However, for a chart right on the borderline, the conclusion can change depending on those two characters.

Why do apps give different strong/weak results?

Because apps differ in how much weight they give the month branch, how they count the hidden stems, and whether they factor in combinations and clashes. The closer a chart is to the borderline, the more the results diverge. Rather than trusting a single result, it's more reliable to count seasonal, branch and numerical support yourself.

Does a strong or weak Day Master stay the same for life?

The strength of your birth chart stays the same. But there are periods when supporting elements arrive in your 10-year luck cycle or annual luck and you feel stronger, or draining elements arrive and you feel weaker. So even the same person can feel different from one 10-year period to the next.
