Muin Day Pillar (戊寅)
— Earth on the City Wall, solid earth atop the ramparts
The Muin day pillar is the pairing of Mu (戊), a great, steady mountain, sitting on In (寅), the dawn that opens spring. Its Nayin is Earth on the City Wall — solid earth atop the ramparts. Void branches: Sin·Yu. Sinsal position: Jisal.
Someone whose birth-day stem-branch pair is Muin is said to have a Muin day pillar (ilju 日柱). It's the 15th of the sixty Gapja (六十甲子, 60 stem-branch pairs). The day pillar is the seat of 'you' in Saju (四柱, the Four Pillars), so starting your reading here makes the whole birth chart easier. Let's unpack its structure piece by piece.

What kind of pairing is the Muin day pillar?
Picture a great, steady mountain sitting on the dawn that opens spring. Mu Earth (戊土) is an energy of earth as dependable as a mountain range. It may not show everything inside, but its sense of responsibility — carrying what it takes on all the way — is counted as its strength.
In Wood (寅木) is the point where energy held down all winter first shoots up. It's said to be a seat charged with the drive to get things going. In Five Elements terms, the Day Master Mu is Earth and the day branch In is Wood — a shape in which your seat keeps you on your toes. If the idea of a day pillar is new to you, it's worth reading that first.

What does the Nayin element Earth on the City Wall mean?
It means solid earth atop the ramparts — the earth piled up to build a fortress wall. It isn't loose soil but soil packed and stacked into a fortress, so it's read as an image of protective strength and accumulation. A fortress isn't built overnight, so Earth on the City Wall is said to be an energy that takes time to complete.
The partner that shares Earth on the City Wall is the Gimyo day pillar. Of the two, Muin is on the yang-stem side, so it's read as spreading the same image outward.
How do the Day Master Mu and the day branch In relate?
Inside the day branch are hidden Heavenly Stems called hidden stems (jijanggan 支藏干). In's hidden stems are Mu, Byeong and Gap, and its representative character (main stem) is Gap (甲). Read through the eyes of the Day Master Mu, this becomes Indirect Officer.
It's the shape of sitting on an energy that tempers you. There's always a little tension, but in exchange it's seen as a seat that brings out unusual strength in crises and decisive moments. Roles that carry responsibility are said to suit it. You can see all ten Ten Gods, from Companion to Direct Resource, in the Ten Gods complete guide.
When is the next Muin day?
Every day on the calendar has a stem-branch pair too. We used the Mutal Unnie Saju engine to work out when the next Muin days fall. The cycle is 60 days.

| December 30, 2026 (Wed) |
For a Muin day pillar, a Muin day is when the same stem-branch pair as your day pillar comes back around. Traditionally it's seen as a day when your own energy doubles up, so the ups and downs of your condition tend to show clearly. How each day's stem-branch pair rotates continues in the story of iljin.
What does Gongmang Sin and Yu mean?
The Void is set by the group (decade, sun 旬) a day pillar belongs to. The Muin day pillar belongs to the Gapsul decade, so its Void branches are Sin·Yu. Sin (申) and Yu (酉), two characters of Metal energy, are the empty seats. On days when these characters arrive, it's said to help if you loosen your grip on results a little.
You don't need to drop your plans on a Gongmang day. It's seen as a day that actually gets easier if you lower your expectations a little. The concept is explained in detail in Gongmang explained.
What does the Jisal position mean?
In the Fire frame (火局) formed by the Three Harmony of In·O·Sul, In holds the birth position (saengji 生地). Read in terms of the Twelve Sinsal, this makes the Muin day pillar's day branch Jisal.
Jisal (地殺, Earth Star) is also called the star of the road. It's seen as gaining strength by going back and forth and broadening out rather than settling in one place for long, and it's interpreted as a good match for work with frequent business trips and travel. The full picture of the twelve sinsal is in the Twelve Sinsal complete guide.
Is the day pillar all I need to look at?
What this note covers is the nature of the day pillar — two of the Eight Characters. Once the other six — your birth year, month and hour — are added, the story changes a great deal. Even with the same Muin day pillar, someone born in spring and someone born in autumn are seen as using different strategies. So treat this note only as a starting point, and continue the full picture in the order for reading a birth chart.

What kind of day pillar is Muin?

What is the Nayin element of the Muin day pillar?
Earth on the City Wall (城頭土) — the image of solid earth atop the ramparts. It shares this Nayin with the Gimyo day pillar.
When is the next Muin day?
The nearest is September 1, 2026 (Tue), followed by October 31, 2026 (Sat) and December 30, 2026 (Wed). The cycle is 60 days, and the dates are calculated by the Mutal Unnie Saju engine.
What does it mean that the Void branches are Sin·Yu?
It means that in the Gapsul decade, to which the Muin day pillar belongs, the two characters Sin·Yu are left without a partner. Days carrying those characters are seen as having less force behind them — that doesn't make them bad days.
