Im-o Day Pillar (壬午)
— Willow Wood, wood as supple as a willow

Day pillars · · 5 min read

In short

Day Master Im (壬), day branch O (午) — this is the Im-o day pillar. It uses the Nayin Willow Wood, wood as supple as a willow; its Void branches are Sin and Yu, and its day-branch sinsal position is Jangseongsal.

Of the Eight Characters in Saju (四柱, the Four Pillars), the two of the day you were born are called the day pillar (ilju 日柱). It's the pillar that describes you most closely. The Im-o day pillar is the 19th stem-branch pair of the sixty Gapja (六十甲子). Below, we'll go step by step: the nature of the Day Master and day branch, then the Nayin element (納音五行), Gongmang (空亡, the Void), the Twelve Sinsal (十二神殺, twelve symbolic stars), and the next Im-o days.

What kind of pairing is the Im-o day pillar?

Picture great, ceaselessly flowing water sitting on the fire of midday. Im Water (壬水) is great water that never stops flowing. It's said to be an energy that thinks on a large scale and isn't afraid to head somewhere new.

O Fire (午火) is the hour when the sun is directly overhead. It's said to be a seat of high activity, with nothing hidden and everything out in the open. In Five Elements terms, the Day Master Im is Water and the day branch O is Fire — a shape in which you handle your seat. If the idea of a day pillar is new to you, it's worth reading that first.

What does the Nayin element Willow Wood mean?

It means wood as supple as a willow — the willow on a riverbank. It bends in the wind but doesn't break, and it takes root by the water and thrives anywhere, so it's read as an image of resilience. As a Nayin of flexibility and warmth toward others, it's interpreted as an energy that gently connects people.

The partner that shares Willow Wood is the Gyemi day pillar. Of the two, Im-o has a yang stem, so even with the same image it's read as the one that moves first and shows it outwardly.

How do the Day Master Im and the day branch O relate?

The hidden stems of the day branch O are Byeong, Gi and Jeong, and the main hidden stem is Jeong (丁). Seen from the Day Master Im, the main stem Jeong is the Ten God Direct Wealth.

You sit on an energy of wealth that's managed step by step. It's a seat that builds things up carefully and steadily, so it has long been read as an image of thrifty household management. It likes things to go according to plan, and that sense of stability is counted as its strength. You can see all ten Ten Gods, from Companion to Direct Resource, in the Ten Gods complete guide.

When is the next Im-o day?

Every day on the calendar has a stem-branch pair too. We used the Mutal Unnie Saju engine to work out when the next Im-o days fall. The cycle is 60 days.

Next Im-o days
September 5, 2026 (Sat)
November 4, 2026 (Wed)
January 3, 2027 (Sun)

A day carrying the same stem-branch pair as your day pillar is seen as a day when your own energy doubles up. If you jot down how you felt on days like these, your rhythm starts to show. How the daily stem-branch pairs rotate is explained in the story of iljin.

What does Gongmang Sin and Yu mean?

The sixty Gapja are grouped into six decades (sun 旬) of ten, and the Im-o day pillar belongs to the Gapsul decade, whose Void branches are Sin·Yu. Sin (申) and Yu (酉), two characters of Metal energy, are the empty seats. On days when these characters arrive, it's said to help if you loosen your grip on results a little.

Being empty doesn't mean bad — it's also interpreted as a seat where attachment has less of a hold. For the full guide to reading the Void, continue with What is Gongmang?

What does the Jangseongsal position mean?

The Twelve Sinsal are set by the role a character plays within its Three Harmony group. O is the peak position (wangji 旺地) of the Fire frame (火局) of In·O·Sul, so the Im-o day pillar's day branch sits in the Jangseongsal position.

When a peak-position character sits in the day branch, it's Jangseongsal (將星殺, General Star). It's seen as suited to the role of making decisions from the very center, and it has long been read as the star of command. The full picture of the twelve sinsal is in the Twelve Sinsal complete guide.

Is the day pillar all I need to look at?

The day pillar is two of the Eight Characters. Even with the same Im-o day pillar, a different birth season (month branch) and birth hour make a completely different chart. An Im (壬) born in the depths of winter and an Im (壬) born at the height of summer need different things from the start. So this note introduces the nature of the Im-o pairing — it isn't a personal Saju reading. If you're curious about your whole birth chart, start with the complete guide to reading Saju.
