Of the eight characters in Saju, the two of the day you were born are called the day pillar (日柱). It's the pillar that describes you most closely. Gapja is the 1st stem-branch pair of the sixty Gapja. Below, we'll go through the nature of its Day Master and day branch, its Nayin element, Gongmang, Twelve Sinsal and the next Gapja dates, in order.

What kind of combination is Gapja?

It's a picture of a great, straight-growing tree sitting on the deep water of midwinter. Gap Wood (甲木), first of the ten Day Masters, is the energy of a tree reaching outward. Its strength is said to be the drive to head straight for a goal once it's set.

Ja Water (子水) corresponds to midnight in the day and around Dongji (Winter Solstice) in the year. It's said to be a position that is calm on the outside and busy on the inside. In Five Elements terms, the Gap Day Master is Wood and the Ja day branch is Water — the seat you sit on supports you. What does the Nayin element Gold in the Sea mean?

It means gold sunk beneath the sea — gold lying on the seabed. It can't be seen not because it has no value but because it hasn't been brought up yet, so it's seen as an image of worth that takes time to show. That's why Gold in the Sea is said to lean toward depth that's drawn up slowly rather than talent that sparkles early.

The pair that shares Gold in the Sea is the Eulchuk day pillar. Of the two, Gapja is on the yang-stem side, so it's seen as spreading the same image outward.

How do the Gap Day Master and Ja day branch relate?

Inside the day branch are hidden Heavenly Stems called hidden stems. Ja's hidden stems are Im and Gye, and its representative character (main hidden stem) is Gye (癸). Read through the eyes of the Gap Day Master, this becomes Direct Resource.

It sits on an energy that nurtures and helps you. Learning comes naturally, and help from elders tends to follow, so it has long been interpreted as an image of scholarship and stability. When is the next Gapja day?

Each day on the calendar carries a stem-branch pair too. We calculated when the next Gapja day falls with Mutal Unnie's Saju engine. The cycle is 60 days.

These are the days when a person with a Gapja day pillar has their own stem-branch pair come around again. Rather than sorting them into good or bad, we suggest using them as days to check your own pace. The idea of iljin continues in the iljin story.

What does Gongmang Sul and Hae mean?

Of the six decades (旬) made by grouping the sixty Gapja in tens, the Gapja day pillar belongs to the Gapja decade, whose Gongmang is Sul and Hae. Sul (戌) and Hae (亥) are the positions left without a partner. When these two characters appear in your birth chart or the day's stem-branch pair, they're read as carrying less force than usual.

What does the Jangseongsal position mean?

The Twelve Sinsal are set by the role a character plays in its Three Harmony group. Ja is the peak position of the Sin-Ja-Jin Water group (水局), so the Gapja day branch is in the Jangseongsal position.

Is the day pillar all I need to look at?

The day pillar is two of eight characters. Even with the same Gapja day pillar, a different birth season (month branch) and time make an entirely different Saju. A Gap (甲) born in midwinter and a Gap (甲) born in midsummer differ from the very first thing they need.
