MBTI vs Saju
— how reading your personality by Day Master is different
MBTI is a personality type set by how you answer questions, so it can change with timing and mood; Saju is calculated from your birth date and time, so the same input always gives the same birth chart. In Saju, the shortest clue to your personality is the Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. Both are tools for conversations about understanding yourself, and it's best not to use either to judge people or to make hiring or relationship decisions.

What's the difference between MBTI and Saju?
MBTI starts from “how you answered”; Saju starts from “when you were born.” With different ingredients, they describe the same person in different languages.
| Category | MBTI | Saju |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Your answers to questions | Birth date and time of birth |
| Result | 16 types | Eight characters (birth chart); 60 combinations from the day pillar alone |
| Taking it again | Can change with timing and mood | Same input, same birth chart |
| Time | The type itself has no concept of time | Reads the flow through Daeun, annual luck and the iljin |
| Background | A personality test built on Jung's theory of psychological types | A traditional East Asian interpretation based on yin-yang and the Five Elements |
| Used for | Introducing yourself, team conversations | Your temperament, the flow of each period, choosing dates |
Why are people turning to Saju after MBTI?
More people feel that a type name alone doesn't explain enough. Saju adds a time axis to the same person's temperament: “what kind of period am I in now?”
In a survey by Korea's Daehak Naeil 20s Research Institute, cited in a trend column in the Korean daily Asia Economy (May 2026), 43% of people in their teens and twenties said they read their fortune to understand their own personality. In another survey cited in the same column, 68.0% of people in their twenties and 67.5% in their thirties said they were interested in Saju and tarot. In Korea, the language of self-introduction is widening from “What's your type?” to “What's your day pillar?”
Which character in Saju shows my personality?
The first character to look at is the Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. It's the position that stands for “you” in Saju, so the Day Master is used for a short description of personality. The Day Master together with the day branch beneath it makes the two-character day pillar.
| Day Master | In nature | Common personality description |
|---|---|---|
| Gap Wood 甲 | A great tree growing straight | Clear sense of direction; tends to take the lead |
| Eul Wood 乙 | Grass and vines | Adapts flexibly; good at weaving relationships |
| Byeong Fire 丙 | The sun | Bright, frank and open |
| Jeong Fire 丁 | A candle or lamp | Sensitive; cares deeply for one person |
| Mu Earth 戊 | A great mountain | Holds steady and keeps the center |
| Gi Earth 己 | Field soil | Attentive, nurturing and practical |
| Gyeong Metal 庚 | Rock or raw ore | Quick to decide; sticks to principles |
| Sin Metal 辛 | A polished jewel | High standards; sensitive to detail |
| Im Water 壬 | The sea or a great river | Sees the big picture; thinks a lot |
| Gye Water 癸 | Rain and dew | Quietly seeps in; good at reading feelings |
The table summarizes traditional metaphors; your actual personality depends on all eight characters and your environment. The difference between the Day Master and the day pillar is covered in detail in Day pillar and Day Master.
How do I find my day pillar?
Enter your Gregorian birth date in a manseryeok (Korean perpetual calendar) and read the two characters in the “day pillar” box. The top character is your Day Master and the bottom one is your day branch.
- Have your Gregorian date readyIf you only know your lunar birthday, convert it to the Gregorian calendar first.
- Enter it in the manseryeokPut your date into the free Manseryeok calculator. Your day pillar appears even without a birth time.
- Read the two characters of your day pillarFor example, if it's Gyeong-o (庚午), your Day Master is Gyeong Metal and your day branch is O.
- Double-check if you were born around 11 p.m.Your day pillar can differ depending on the day-boundary convention.
Descriptions of each of the 60 day pillars are in All 60 Day Pillars.
If my MBTI and day pillar don't match, which one is right?
Rather than one of them being wrong, they look at different layers. MBTI shows the ways of behaving you said you prefer right now; the Day Master is the traditional metaphor for your inborn temperament. For example, if you're a Byeong Fire Day Master but came out as an introvert, you can layer the two descriptions: “someone with the power to shine outward who recharges alone.”
Don't use them like this
Neither MBTI nor Saju is suited to screening people or choosing who to hire or date. Use them as questions that open a conversation, and base real judgments on your experiences with that person.

FAQ
Is Saju more accurate than MBTI?
It's hard to compare accuracy on the same scale. MBTI is an answer-based personality test, and Saju is a traditional interpretation calculated from your birth date. Both work best as reference tools for understanding yourself.
Why does my MBTI change but my Saju doesn't?
MBTI results are set by your answers at the time, so they can vary over time. A Saju birth chart is calculated from your birth date and time, so the same input gives the same result. Instead, Saju reads the flow of each period separately through Daeun and annual luck.
Are the Day Master and the day pillar the same thing?
No. The Day Master is the single Heavenly Stem of the day you were born, and the day pillar is two characters: the Day Master plus the day branch beneath it. Use the Day Master for a short description of personality and the day pillar for a more specific one.
Can I find my day pillar without knowing my birth time?
Yes. Your day pillar is set by the day you were born. If you were born between 11 p.m. and midnight, though, it can differ depending on the day-boundary convention.
